The Driver provides essential transportation, moving, and delivery services across York University’s campuses. This role is highly client-facing, involving regular interactions with faculty, staff, students, and visitors. Drivers support a variety of operational needs, including office and furniture moves, transporting waste bins and construction materials, and delivering supplies.
This position also contributes to the effective functioning of the Grounds, Fleet, and Waste Management team by assisting with logistics, handling heavy loads, and ensuring safe vehicle operations. The role requires both physical capability and a strong focus on safety, teamwork, and customer service.

Key Responsibilities
As a Driver at York University, you will:

Safely operate large trucks, trailers, and tractors to move furniture, waste bins, construction materials, and other large items.

Manage office relocations, furniture delivery, and the transportation of equipment across campus.

Load, secure, and unload heavy items, ensuring safe handling and delivery practices at all times.

Provide logistical support to the Grounds, Fleet, and Waste Management teams as required.

Demonstrate safe and defensive driving practices in compliance with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.

Ensure vehicle safety by reporting maintenance issues and following all university fleet procedures.

Deliver services in a customer-focused manner, representing Facilities Services in a professional way.

Qualifications
Education & Licensing

A valid Class “F” driver’s licence (minimum requirement) with a driving record acceptable to the university.
Experience
-
Minimum of two years’ recent experience (within the last five years) operating large trucks and/or tractors.

Experience moving heavy furniture, equipment, or other large items.
Skills & Competencies

Ability to safely lift, load, and transport heavy objects such as office furniture.

Solid knowledge of vehicle load distribution, load securement, and transportation of hazardous materials.

Strong defensive driving habits with a focus on safety.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Demonstrated teamwork and customer service skills.

English language proficiency (spoken, written, and reading comprehension) is required to follow safety instructions, communicate with team members, and use mobile devices for messages and updates.
