Job Duties

Workers will perform a variety of tasks related to the production and maintenance of sugarcane, soybean, wheat, and crawfish on a farm. The role involves physically demanding work under varying weather conditions. Specific duties include:

  • Crop-Related Tasks:
    • Field Preparation: Manual shovel work, hoeing weeds, and spot spraying treatments to prepare fields for planting.
    • Planting and Fertilizing: Planting crops and applying fertilizers as needed.
    • Water Maintenance: Managing irrigation systems to ensure proper water levels for crops.
    • Harvesting: Harvesting sugarcane, soybeans, wheat, and crawfish.
    • Post-Harvest: Raking and burning shucks to promote regrowth for the next season.
  • Crawfish-Specific Tasks:
    • Manually cutting fish bait, baiting traps, and checking crawfish traps.
    • Grading and washing crawfish for shipment.
    • Making and repairing crawfish traps as needed.
  • Equipment and Infrastructure Maintenance:
    • Operating tractors and other farm equipment for various tasks.
    • Repairing and maintaining equipment, farm infrastructure, fields, levees, roads, and shop areas.
    • Loading and unloading trucks with crops, supplies, or tools.
  • General Farm Tasks:
    • Incidental work such as repairing buildings, maintaining grounds, gardening, and setting up crop-related infrastructure.
    • Driving trucks to transport crops, supplies, tools, or workers as needed.
  • Physical Demands:
    • Lifting and carrying heavy objects exceeding 70 lbs.
    • Performing repetitive tasks in bent, stooped, or standing positions for extended periods.
    • Working outdoors in inclement weather, including extreme heat (temperatures above 100°F), cold, or drought conditions.
  • Work Quality:
    • The role demands high-quality work to meet strict agricultural standards. Sloppy work is not tolerated, as the business is highly competitive.

Job Requirements

  • Experience:
    • Required: Yes
    • Minimum Experience: 3 months of positive, verifiable experience in similar farmwork duties.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to lift and carry in excess of 70 lbs regularly.
    • Capability to perform strenuous tasks, including stooping, bending, and working in extreme weather conditions.
  • Special Requirements:
    • Must have legal authority to work in the United States.
    • Workers may be subject to random, post-accident, or suspicion-based drug tests and background checks after hire, at no cost to the worker.
    • Testing positive for drugs or failing to comply with testing may result in immediate termination.
    • All tools and housing are provided by the employer.

Work Schedule and Conditions

  • Hours per Week: 40 hours (weather and crop conditions permitting).
  • Work Schedule: 7:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. (typical daily schedule).
    • Seven to eight hours per day is standard, but workers may be offered additional hours (up to 12-14 hours/day) during peak times, depending on field conditions, weather, and crop maturity.
    • Workers may be requested, but not required, to work on Saturdays, Sundays, the Sabbath, or federal holidays during peak periods.
    • Lunch and break times will be designated by the employer.
  • General Conditions:
    • Work begins shortly after daylight at an assigned time and location.
    • Tasks are performed under various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, or drought.
    • Workers will engage in repetitive physical tasks, including lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying heavy objects.
    • The employer may assign workers to different tasks (e.g., sugarcane, soybeans, wheat, or crawfish duties) on any given day based on operational needs.
    • Occasional periods of little or no work may occur due to weather, crop conditions, or other factors beyond the employer’s control.
    • The percentage of time spent on specific crops or tasks cannot be predicted due to the unpredictable nature of agricultural production (influenced by weather, market demands, and seasonal needs).

Compensation and Benefits

  • Raises and Bonuses:
    • Raises and/or bonuses may be offered at the employer’s discretion, based on individual performance, skill, and tenure.
  • Housing:
    • Provided by the employer at no cost to the worker.
  • Tools:
    • All necessary tools and equipment are furnished by the employer.
