Job Purpose

Performs required product quality testing, documents results, and follows all safety and PPE
directives. Works with minimal direction from Manager or Lead; has some latitude in
determining work objectives and goals.

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to the environmental, safety, and health policies and procedures, and suggests
    continuous improvement ideas for safety and health.
  • Works with some direction from Manager or Lead.
  • Tests and inspects liquid coatings and foams at various stages of the production process
    to determine and maintain quality and reliability of products.
  • Performs all lab procedures including printing labels, testing, and complete and accurate
    record keeping.
  • Tests products at specified stages in the production process for a variety of qualities such
    as viscosity, solids, density, fineness of grind, delta E color, pH, moisture, rise time, tack
    free time, spray density, etc.
  • Conducts custom color matching and individual batch tinting to match standards.
  • Understands raw material and finished good codes, batch numbers.
  • Understands the basic differences in chemistry between the main families of products:
    silicone, foam, epoxy, acrylic, urethane.
  • Identifies and labels nonconforming material to be reworked or as scrap.
  • Evaluates raw materials, packaging, customer returns, complaint samples, research
    samples, etc. for quality parameters and field performance.
  • Supports investigations of customer complaints and production issues.
  • Operates, maintains, calibrates, and checks analytical instruments and equipment.
  • Repairs instruments and equipment independently.
  • Provide training to production and research personnel on basic quality methods and
    equipment.
  • Drives continuous improvement in the quality laboratory, encouraging team to identify
    opportunities for change that will improve quality, and helping to implement changes.
  • With minimal direction from Manager or Lead, collects and tracks quality and production
    data to identify variation in raw materials, finished goods, manufacturing processes,
    equipment calibrations, etc. (SPC, SQC), and understands how to interpret the data.
  • Determines supply needs for the quality laboratory, and purchase supplies.
  • Evaluates, selects, and purchases lab equipment, and knows the procedures for small and
    capital purchases.
  • Formulates new custom colors.
  • Develops and validates analytical and QC methods, using Gage R&R precision studies and
    accuracy studies, and documents validations.
  • Provides audit support.
  • Conducts studies to determine shelf life and stability of raw and finished goods.
  • Evaluates packaging for various materials.
  • Helps determine initial and revised specifications for raw, packaging, and finished goods.
  • Maintains deviation database.
  • Documents, controls, and disposes of retains.
  • Works with Quality Manager to disposition nonconforming material in AX.
  • Label nonconforming items in the warehouse with their dispositions.

Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in related field.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical; must be at least 18 years old.
  • At least 5 years’ experience working in a quality lab testing environment
  • Gage R&R or method validation experience preferred.
  • Six Sigma or continuous process improvement experience desired.
  • SQC, SPC experience desired.
  • Basic knowledge of Chemistry required.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail with emphasis on accuracy and quality.
  • Computer proficiency with MS Office suite.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, professional environment, with minimal supervision.
  • A self-starter with efficient time management abilities, able to multitask.
  • Work in a collaborative and team-oriented environment, with a positive attitude and
    adaptability.
  • Must possess ability to accurately follow instructions.
  • Effective written/oral communication skills.
  • Strong math skills and be able to read, write and comprehend instructions in English.
  • Must have a good eye for color.
  • Must be safety oriented at all times.
  • Must follow work rules, be adaptable, and be willing to perform a variety of jobs.
  • Prior knowledge of chemicals and hazmat handling a plus.

Working Conditions

Laboratory setting/ Office/ Plant floor / Warehouse

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to pass respirator fit test and medical evaluation.
  • Must be clean shaven to meet work requirements
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Must be able to work in an office setting with office business equipment
  • Ability to work on your feet for long periods of time
  • Ability to use hands and arms to lift and reach overhead, carry, grasp, finger, push, and
    pull.
  • Regularly operates a computer, computer accessories, phone and specialized lab
    equipment
  • Occasionally bends, stoops, and kneels
  • Ability to hear at normal speaking levels
  • Required to have visual acuity to regularly utilize close vision, depth perception, and
    peripheral vision to operate laboratory equipment and negotiate manufacturing
    environment.
  • Regularly required to do repetitive motions
  • Medium work requiring up to 50lbs of force occasionally and up to 20lbs of force
    frequently
  • Subject to internal environmental conditions and temperature changes
  • Ability to distinguish color variations.
  • Subject to hazards, including a variety of physical conditions and proximity to moving
    mechanical parts and atmospheric conditions that may affect the respiratory system.
